BOXING TO-NIGHT

HAY AND McKNIGHT TWO DIFFERENT STYLES GOOD AMATEUR PROGRAMME What promises to be a hard and scientific display of boxing will be seen at the Auckland Town Hall this evening, when Nelson McKnight will met Artie Hay in a contest of 15 two-minute rounds. Colour is lent to the fight by he fact that this is McKnight's first ap- i pearance in the ring since his return j from America, where he was more than ordinarily successful, and he will be out to show that he has improved since he last fought in New Zealand. In his gymnasium work-outs McKnight has been showing good form. He is a shifty mover and pumps out his left for the face very fast, followed by his right. He uses both hands well to the body, ripping in a left and when the right when going in close. When sparring McKnight showed a desire to go in and fight all the time, and the result was some very good work-outs. He is a better fighter than a boxer. On the other hand, Hay is a better boxer than a fighter, though when he defeated Broadfoot In the Town Hall he showed that he knew how to deal with a fighter. Whether he can do the same against McKnight will be seen when the pair meet this evening. Hay is a much cleverer boxer than he is generally acknowledged to be, and he possesses a stinging left hand which is always in position to connect. This left has been his biggest mainstay in his past contests and he will endeavour to use this same weapon to bring about the downfall of McKnight. His right is also effective, though he does not use it unnecessarily. With two such opponents a good fight is to be expected. Scientific boxing and hard hitting promise interest throughout the fight. A good programme of amateur fights has also been arranged. Clarrie McKnight and Fred Fraei will fight a i six-round bout for a special trophy; ! the feather-weights Manson and McI Loughlin and Rickard and McCarthy | will meet over the usual preliminary . distance, and the other amateur conV test will be between the fly-weights, i Crook and Purdie.
