SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

Two Important Matches

LEADERS MEET IN TO-MORROW’S GAMES THE games at Blandford Park to-morrow, are of more than usual interest as they will have an important bearing on the postion of the leading - clubs on the ladder. The unbeaten Y.M.C.A. will be opposed by Ponsonby, which is now coming - back to best form; while the match between Thistle and Shore, who have lost one game each, should provide the liveliest tussle of the season. At Onehunga the home team meets Northcote, and Belmont has been drawn against Trams.

In spite of recent rains the arena at Blandford Park is in splendid order, and the matches to-morrow are of far more than usual interest. The four leading teams on the championship ladder are all appearing on the programme. The result of the games will have a significant bearing on the position of the teams after the first round of the championship, and with each eleven at full strength, and’ in its best form, there is certain to be some strenuous and exciting Soccer in the struggles far the winning points. Y.M.C.A. have yet to taste defeat, but the display of the Young Men against Belmont last Saturday indicated a falling-away from previous form, and Ponsonby has been bowling along ' in fine stvjte after getting badly out of the barrier at the start of the season. If Y.M. shows signs of faltering to-morrow, the Ponies can be relied upon to seize any openings, and some lively rallies between the rivals may be expected. The principal game between Thistle and Shore will recall the many hard and grim battles between these clubs which have always stood out prominently in the code, and rarely has there been more than the smallest margin between them. The majority of the Shore lads are local youths who have worked up from the school team, while the Thistle men have all learned their game where it is found at its highest pitch of perfection. The result to-morrow will be a clash in styles which should fascinate those who appreciate clever team work. The Scots rely mostly on closepassing with machine-like precision and accurate co-ordination between halves and forwards. Shore plays the free and open long-passing game. Not, of course, the blind kick-and-rush, “up-and-under,”. style; but scientific crossing from wing to wing, relying on pace and accurate placements to overrun the defence. The Thistle defenders know they are in for a lively time to-morrow, but it is a very solid opposition of seasoned and heady players. If the Shore halves can hold the Flying Scotsmen on the Thistle wings, and set; their own front line in action, the black and golds may win; but it is doubtful if the margin will be much either way.
