RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE LOSSES AT SHOW GROUNDS Losses at the Show Grounds were the subject of a letter received from the Grammar Old Boys’ Club, at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union presided over by Mr. H. Frost last evenIt was decided to appoint Messrs. Belcher and Conlan as a committee to prepare a report on the general conditions affecting the Show Grounds lease. A man will be employed to look after the players’ clothes next Saturday. It was requested by the Waikato Union that the Auckland Union endorse an appeal to the New Zealand Union for financial assistance in combating rival codes in the district. The request was agreed to. Several expedients were suggested to overcome the difficulty of arranging competition matches with outside clubs, notably, Swanson, Manurewa and Papatoetoe. Mr. Belcher suggested that the union should meet the clubs half-way—Swanson should play at Avondale, Manurewa and Papatoetoe at Otahuhu. The question was referred to the Junior Advisory Board, with a recommendation that Mr. Belcher’s suggestion be given consideration. In order that the senior representatives might have a game together before leaving on their Southern tour, the match to be played against Thames at Thames, was fixed for July 21. A return match will be played in Auckland on September 15. The full programme of representative fixtures will be completed next week. It was decided to recommend favourably the reinstatements of F. C. King, R. Oliphant and P. F. Holmes. The transfers of W. McElwain from Newton to City, and W. R. Woolhouse from North Shore to Technical Old Boys were approved. PLAYER DISQUALIFIED FOR THE SEASON Two Walton players, A. Thrupp and W. Moore, who were ordered off on Saturday by the referee, Mr. R. McCready, the former for attempting to strike an opponent and the latter for punching an opposing player, were dealt with by the Management Committee of the Matamata Sub-Union on Tuesday evening. Mr. J. E. Cummings presided. Neither player appeared. In the case of Thrupp it was stated that he had been collared without the ball and had attempted to hit the offending opponent. The committee decided that he should be cautioned. The Referees’ Association (Mr. F. Hitchcock) asked that more drastic action be taken against Moore. It was not for the actual act of punching that they asked for a penalty, but on account of Moore’s conduct afterwards. Moore’s own supports had unsuccessfully advised him to be quiet. It was unanimously decided on the motion of the chairman to disqualify Moore for the season. A complaint of the “unseemly behaviour” of a referee in threatening to order., a spectator off the ground was received from Mr. P. Field, of Matamata. It was decided to ask Mr. Field to furnish full details of the incident.
