TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR SHEEP AND CATTLE LOST Press Association. WHANGAREI, To-day. Sensational reports of flooding come from the Mangakahia district. Between 3 o’clock and daybreak on Monday rain descended in such a torrential fashion as to convince every one that a cloudburst had occurred in the vicinity. Very soon there was a wall of water sweeping down the valley. Three bridges and miles of fencing were swept away. In places the water was 16ft deep. Several settlers are heavy losers, one having 500 sheep drowned. The total damage is estimated at £1,200. Another settler lost 32 prime cattle just ready for market.
