UNABLE TO SEE STARS

TRIALS OF ASTRONOMERS As the most interesting parts of the heavens are obscured by buildings adjacent to the Auckland Institute’s observatory in the old Grammar School grounds, the Astronomical Section hopes, as soon as funds permit, to have the telescope moved to a more advantageous site. The unsatisfactory position was discussed at the annual meeting of the section held last evening under the presidency of Professor P. W. Burbidge. It was stated that the unfavourable locality precluded the possibility of seeing the comet last year. Despite a slight decrease in membership the past year had been very successful, stated the annual report. Nine meetings, at five of which popular papers were read, were well attended. Owing to the prevalence of cloudy w*eather attendances at the observatory on Tuesday nights was poor. The balance-sheet showed a slight increase in the cash on hand, the amount being £2B. Officers were all re-elected as follow: Patron, Mr. George Baildon; president. Professor P. W. Burbidge; vice-presi-dent, A. G. Lunn; auditor, Professor H. W. Segar; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. G. Jones; committee, Messrs. J. P. Artha, N. H. Good, G. Knight, and J. Mack. At'the conclusion of business, lantern slides of Saturn, the moon and other heavenly bodies were shown by Mr. Lunn an d Professor £^urbidge.
