LATE TURF
WANGANUI MEETING THE FINAL GALLOPS LADIES’ BOY’S SMART HALF (Special to THE SUH) WANGANUI, To-day. A heavy thunderstorm about 5 o’clock this morning thoroughly soaked the tracks, and several heavy showers fell during training operations. There was not much fast work, the majority of candidates being allowed to stride along. Royal Ramon stood on the mark and ran six furlongs in 1.20, the first furlong taking 14 1-5, two 26 4-5, and four 52. The big chestnut is very well, and must have a great chance in the Connolly Handicap. Lady’s Boy went four furlongs wide out in 52, the first two taking 25 2-5. MISTER GAMP ON TOP Peter Maxwell had a break over a length on Mister Gamp at the start of a mile, but Mister Gamp finished a couple of lengths ahead in 1.49 1-5. The first two furlongs occupied 26 4-5, the half-mile taking 53 and the five furlongs 1.6. Mister Gamp is in great trim, while Peter Maxwell has nothing wrong with him. With Wiggins up, Comical went a mile alone, reeling off the distance in 1.48 3-5. The first quarter occupied 26 2-5, the half-mile 54, five 1.4 4-5, and six 1.20.
Pouri covered a mile at three-quar-ter pace pleasingly. Tuki and Aberfeldy also worked well at a fast clip. Peneus and Red Fuchsia covered seven furlongs in 1.35, finishing practically on terms. Avro went five furlongs in 1.6 2-5, the last four taking 53. The first quarter took 26 and the three 39. Brigadier Bill and Ruby Ring were associated in a gallop on No. 1, wide out, registering 1.22 3-5, the first quarter taking 26 and the half 52 3-5. Shining Armour finished in front of ICawhakina and Argue over five furlongs in 1.5, the first furlong taking 13. Kawhakina is a likely light-weight in the Connolly. A LIKELY FILLY
Moa Bird was stepped out over five furlongs and covered the distance in 1.4 4-5, the first two furlongs taking 25 2-5, and the three 38 1-5. This smart filly will run well in the Borough.
There was a large number of others doing strong exercise, hut no jumping of any kind. Peneus will not start in the Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, but will be ridden by Alan McDonald in the May Hurdles.
