MOTORIST CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER
MARRIED WOMAN KILLED ACCIDENT NEAK HAWERA Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Tuesday. A fatal accident on the main road near Mokoia on February 24, had its sequel in the Supreme Court to-day, when George' Cravy Smith, stock buyer, of Hawera, was charged with manslaughter, with driving a motor-car negligently so as to cause the death of Millicent Elizabeth Richter, wife of a Mokoia farmer, and with driving a car while intoxicated, so that death was caused. A plea of not guilty was entered on all counts. Evidence was given that accused drove past Mokoia at 35 miles an hour. On© man in his car was hanging over the side as though drunk, or asleep. Shortly afterwards some motorists found Mrs. Richter lying seriously injured on the roadside, with accused’s car standing farther on. The woman was taken to hospital and died next evening. The police said that when they interviewed accused he showed signs of being under the influence of liquor. A passenger in accused's car admitted that they had had drinks. Medical evidence was given that cused had had more drink than was good for him. The case for the Crown concluded at this stage. (Proceeding)
