PAPAKURA AFFAIRS

The No. 2 District Highways advised the Papakura Town Board at its meeting last evening, that the Papakura, Hunua Road had been recommended as a main highway. The chairman said that the route would be by way of Marne Road. A letter was received from the One Tree Hill Road Board, which stated that the steadily increasing demands made for hospital maintenance and Charitable Aid Board was seriously perturbing local bodies, and suggesting that the time had arrived to call a halt. Points suggested were: (1) That the provision of a sinking fund of 10 per cent for buildings of a permanent nature is considered excessive; (2) that the payment of. relief from hospital funds should be limited to, say, £20,000 or £25,000 per annum, any additional money required to be a charge on the consolidated fund. The One Tree Hill Road Board suggested a conference of all local bodies contributing to the funds of the Auckland Hospital, to be held at an early date. Papakura’s quota is £587 5s sd, or £l2O more than last year, an increase of 25 per cent. Rev. W. C. Wood, in moving that the board express its willingness to tak© part in such a conference, said the increased amount asked for was reasonable, but the method of collecting it was open to criticism. The chairman endorsed members’ remarks, and it was decided to take part in the proposed conference. The surveyor of the Papakura Station Estate, in a letter to the board, stated that the owner had decided to proceed with the three remaining streets, and having been put to considerable expense asked the board to make metalling conditions as reasonable as possible. It was decided to ask for further information as to what was required.
