POWER TROUBLES
REPAIRS AT NEW PLYMOUTH UNEXPECTED BREAKAGES Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. For the first time since the landslide on April 27, which carried away 100 ft of the water-race, the New Plymouth hydro-electric highhead system was run between 11.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. to-day. When the newly-installed 36in pipe line was running at full pressure this morning some packing on the temporary cap gave way under the back pressure, and a small quantity of water began to escape. The engineer ordered the water to be shut off, and had the joint repacked, but when the water was being turned on again the machinery operating the valve which closes the outlet to the settling pond, broke. As a result it is now impossible to prevent the escape of water or to raise the level of the lake to give a sufficient flow to operate the high-head to the maximum. In the meantime water is continuing to flow down the Mangamahoe Stream to the old intake, from which the r - low-head turbines are operated An inspection is to be made . morning, but it is thought that the whole system might have to be shut down and the lake completely drained before the damaged valve can be repaired.
