RIFT IN LABOUR LUTE

SOUTH AFRICAN PARTY UNITY EFFORTS ABANDONED (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Pres 3 Association.) CAPETOWN, Friday. , All efforts to bridge the gulf which now divides the South African Labour Party have been abandoned, and the two factions have called conferences. The National Council of the party, supported by a majority of the branches, boldly proclaims that Colonel F. H. Cresswell, Minister of Defence, and leader of the party, must go. They describe his act in summoning a conference as the last desperate throw of ambition. Colonel Cresswell adheres to the position that the National Council was irregularly elected by irregular branches. The forthcoming conference is to be asked to condemn the malpractices of the last three years, and to elect an emergency administration in an effort to save the party. The Nationalists are concerned about the fate of their pact with Labour, in view of the imminence of the general election, and they have demanded an assurance that only one Labour candidate will be nominated for each of the constituencies allotted to Labour by the pact.
