Sir,— I noticed in the papers a short tuns back that the City Council had raised the salaries of some of ics high-paki officials. This seemed to me a mo® extraordinary proceeding. When * had lately to discharge a number <*• workmen to curtail expenses, one would have thought that it would have beer* the other way about, and that* reduction would have taken place;*** stead of an increase. It seems tnax the reduction of rates that we ha been looking for and hoping to get*» still a long way off, unless we ta* a little more interest in what is going on at the present time, and at ino next election replace the present epu®” cil with gone business men, who ha some little knowledge of finance. way that material in connection n the different jobs is wasted is appalling.
