NGAROMA COMPLAINT
Sir, — After 15 years of bitter struggle and hardships in this bush-sick block of Ngaroma, I am writing to you explaining that I have sent a letter to the Minister of Lands asking him straightout if he is going to resettle me on healthy country as he promised on the public platform at Te Awamutu. Following on that promise I wasted time and money in inspecting a section at Pukemapou, but the Land Board refused my application. Either the Minister or the Land Board is not prepared to carry out the promises made to the Ngaroma settlers. The sickness of the rhyolite portions of this block was brought before the
notice of the department in 1915 by the settlers and a continuous battle has been raging ever since. After the report of the last commission, whose findings were to be carried out, the settlers got nothing. The settlers sent a petition signed by 32 out of 35 settlers praying for an inquiry presided over by a judge of the Supreme Court, and the Minister compromised and made definite terms of settlement, which we accepted. But it now seems to us that the Minister has not played the* game. The settlers have reached the limit of patience with the incompetence of rangers, the hardships which include inaccessible roads, and broken promises. R. E. GODDARD.
