NOBILE LEAVES FOR POLE
RECONNAISANCE FLIGHT MEN DESERT EXPEDITION (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright i (Australian P.A.—United ScrxHcc) Reed. 9.5 a.m. OSLO, Friday. General Humberto Nobile’s airship, the Italia, left King’s Bay on its first reconnaisance flight over the Pole at six this morning. A message from King's Bay, Spitzbergen, says General Nobile met his first serious reverse when six Italian Alpine Chasseurs, who, according to the general plans, were to be dropped at the North Pole for a short survey, left the expedition. Experience of the conditions amid the Polar ice wastes at Spitzbergeu had convinced them that the venture was too hazardous. WILKINS FOR TROMSO PLANE ABOARD SHIP (Australian Brass Association } Reed. 10.50 a.m. SVALBARD, Friday. Captain Willtins and Lieut. Eielsou left for Tromso aboard the steamer Hobby, having overcome the crew's objections to carrying the airplane.
