GENERAL STRIKE FEARED
DANGER OF VOLUNTEER COOKS SEAMEN WARN OWNERS (United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) Reed. noon. MELBOURNE, To-day. It is authoritatively learned that the Marine Cooks’ Union will not be represented at the conference of maritime unions on Monday. . Efforts by the shipowners to introduce volunteer cooks will precipitate a general strike, say the Seamen’s Union. Mr. Justice Dethridge, Chief Judge of the Federal Arbitration Court, stated in Court to-day that he intended to insert an anti-strike clause in future awards, so that the Court will have | power to suspend any award, in the ! event of unreasonable strikes, lockouts, or job controL A Sydney message says the outlook on the waterfront at present is dull, but it is not regarded as being hopeless. Few of the maritime or longI shore workers welcome the idea of a | general strike. The disruption in the i seamen’s ranks, and the prevalence | already of considerable unemployment are considered to be strong fac- ! tors against a widespread hold up of shipping. The fact that the shipowners have j postponed action until next week is i considered a favourable augury that a ! way may yet be found out of the impasse.
