AGAINST FIRE BOARD
MR. MORTON’S LETTERS ONEHUNGA CONTROVERSY Th© cudgels have again been taken up by Mr. F. S. Morton, a member of the Onehunga Borough Council, following the refusal of the Onehunga Fire Board to accept a letter from him dealing with the Onehunga Fire Brigade. He has forwarded the board another letter. In this Mr. Morton states that the ratepayers of Onehunga were persuaded to vote for the creation of the fire board, “which they were assured from the public platform would not cost them a penny more than £6OO. Instead of £6OO the board cost the council last year £B4O, and this year it is assessed at £790.” The writer adds that the ratepayers ar© absolutely helpless to say a word in protest in the meantime, and consequently it will be some time before an opportunity will arrive for them to be able to vote on th© proposal of dismissing or retaining the services of a board. He claims to be able to substantiate his former statement that the fire tender had carried less than three men to a fire.
The suggestion is made by Mr. Morton that a member of the lire board should meet him before an audience of Onehunga ratepayers to discuss the finances of the board, together with other questions. He intimates that the second letter is as far as h.e intends to go with, correspondence,
