PUKEKOHE AFFAIRS
Fire destroyed a seven-roomed residence owned by Mr. G. T. N. Ross, of Papakura, and situated at Happy Valley, Hunua. about one o’clock yesterday morning. The occupants, Mrs. Ross’s son and daughter, were absent, and upon returning found that the house had been burned. The building was insured for £BOO and the contents for £230 in the Royal Exchange Office. The annual meeting of parishioners of St. Andrew’s Church was held at Pukekohe last evening, the vicar, the Rev. J. C. Cowie, presiding. The Archdeacon of Manukau, the Ven. W. J. Simkin, was also present. The vicar reported that the new church fund had been increased to over £7OO, and that during the year the Ladies’ Guild had raised £132 for its objective, and £26 for missions. The efforts of the Girls’ Guild had resulted in £7 being contributed toward the general funds. Officers elected were:—Churchwarden, Mr. H. A. Corbett; church committee, Messrs. J. N. Anderson, L. J. Bayly, R. Bilkey, A. D. Clark. A. V. Fox, E. E. Ingpen, J. Russell, E. F. Snell, W. A. Willis, Major J. A. Sommerville; vestry. Messrs. Anderson, Bayly, Corbett. Russell and Snell. After some discussion it was decided to obtain further information upon the duplex system of finance, a scheme which it was stated had proved successful in other parts.
