GRAFTON BRIDGE AGAIN
Sir, There is nominally a by-law to control pedestrian traffic on the Grafton Bridge, but it is honoured principally in the breach, and the result is much confusion. On such a narrow footway there is no room for people to be jostling about passing one another. But the remedy is ridiculously simple. The City Council in its wisdom made the by-law “keep to the right.’* That is, pedestrians going from the city keep to the right-hand side, and those coming from the hospital to the other, or harbour side. By reversing the arrangement most of the present confusion would be saved, as the tendency is for people from town to keep to the side on which they alight from the trams, and for those approaching the town to go to the side nearest upper Symonds Street, where they board the trams. Naturally they are reluctant to cross the dangerous stream of road traffic more often than necessary, and that explains why pedestrians at present are so persistently on the wrong pavements. The explanation of the confusion is so simple that one must conclude the city traffic authorities are extremely dull-witted. KEEP TO THE LEFT.
