VALVE COOLING

HOLLOW STEM INVENTED More efficient engine performance, and longer life for the valves is claimed ;by the inventor of the “salt-cooled” valve, which is now being manufactured in the U.S.A. Almost the whole of the valve stem is hollow, and is partially filled with a special salt which becomes molten when the engine reaches its normal operating temnerature. As the valve is continually in motion, the salt is constantly being thrown up against the hot head and running down again to the base. This movement, it is claimed, conveys the heat from the head to the base of the valve, where it is easily dissipated to the valve guides, cylinder block and oil-laden air of the tappet chamber. It is claimed that by this method of cooling, the effective surface available for heat dissipation is increased GOO per cent., resulting in valves ( working at a much lower temperature, reducing the tendencies to detonate and pre-ignite, and reducing burning, pitting, and wear.
