PRINCESS AND TIVOLI
“SHEPHERD OF THE HILLS” “The Shepherd of the Hills,” Harold Bell Wright’s great story, is now being shown at the Princess and Tivoli Theatres. The story of this great picture is laid in the quaint out of the world Ozark Mountains. The Matthews—Old Matt, Young Matt and Aunt Mollie—have a grist mill in the Ozards and many sheep in the hills. Young Matt is secretly in love with Sammy Lane, who is engaged to Ollie Stewart. Ollie goes away to the city and comes back so changed that it taxes Sammy Lane’s loyalty to continue to love him. Young Matt loves Sammy more than ever, and The Shepherd prays that he instead of Ollie may win her. Wash Gibbs, the bully of the district, tries to gain control of the sheep of the community by stealing, poisoning them and otherwise discouraging the people who keep them. A prolonged drought aids him, and he starts a migration away from the community. But the Shepherd has sent outside for financial aid and himself purchases food that will see the whole community through until the rain comes. This temporarily delays the migration and thwarts Gibbs. “Young Matt” is played by John Boles, and “Sammy” Lane by Molly O’Day. Alec B. Francis is “The Shepherd” and Matthew Benz the bully, Walsh Gibbs. “Ladies’ Night in a Turkish Bath.” the second feature on the programme, is a hilarious comedy, starring Jack Mulhall and Dorothy Mackaill. Edward Laemmle has announced the inclusion _of Kenneth Harlan and Marian Nixon in his alreadv pretentious cast of “Fallen Angels,” the Arthur Somers Roche Red Book magazine story. The list already includes Norman Kerry, Paulie Stark and Ward Crane.
