ONEHUNGA COUNCIL
BOWSER FEES REDUCED WATER SYSTEM SATISFACTORY Press Association. At last evening’s meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council reference was made to the recent death of Mr. J. W. Waller, at the age of 94, who was Mayor of Onehunga in 1877-1878. The Mayor and Council accepted an invitation from the pastor of the Congregational Church to attend a special service on Mothers’ Day on Sunday, May 13. The Railway Department advised that it had decided to delete the clause in the deed of lease referring to the erection of advertising hoardings on the reserve near the wharf, which the council had taken over with the object of beautifying it. The resignation of Councillor Hill as a member of the Band Committee was accepted. Bowser licence fees are to be reduced from £7 10s to £5 a year as from March 31, next. Councillor Stoupe, chairman of the Waterworks Committee, reported that after thoroughly investigating a new automatic chlorinating system, the committee had decided that it was too costly and could not recommend it, especially as the existing system was giving satisfaction. On the motion of Councillor Hill it was agreed to refer to the Reserves Committee the question of extending the area of the Waikaraka Cemetery by adding a further 211 plots on the south-east corner i of the reserve.
The refuse rate is to be reduced from 10s to 8s a year per house.
