SKIPPER OF BETTY
NAVY LEAGUE APPRECIATION | Eulogistic reference to Mr. G. G. Andrews, who three times in succession has won the Sanders Cup for Canterbury, was made at a meeting of ex-naval men in Christchurch by Mr. J. J. Dougall, president of the Navy League. Mr. Dougall said that the cup had only come to Canterbury this year because of Mr. Andrews’s pluck in taking on the job single-handed, and said that in his opinion Mr. Andrews was the finest boat-sailer in the Dominion. He related how Mr. Andrews had gone to Pic ton with a crew and won three races with a small motor power-boat which he had built. Amid loud applause Mr. Dougall then presented Mr. Andrews with a cup given by the Nayv League to the boat that qualifies for the Sanders Cup race. In thanking Mr. Dougall for all the nice things he had said, Mr. Andrews stated that a lot of them needed to be taken with a grain of salt. He had great pleasure in winning the cups, and the Navy League Cup especially, for in presenting the cup the Navy League had in mind the encouragement of sailing among young men, and that was a very fine object. LATE MR. HOILE BROWN Mr. Wm. Hoile Brown, whose death was announced yesterday, played no small part in developing the sport of boat racing on the Waitemata, particularly in the formerly popular trading boat section, having built several schooners and cutters that won prizes. At one time he used to row in the whale-boat races. When Devon port first promoted regattas, away back in the ’Bo’s, Mr. Brown was on the committees. OWNERS AND THEIR BOATS The three “Star” boats and the Devonport flotilla of speed boats have quitted the water for this season. * * * The relatively mild weather still tempts yachtsmen down harbour; on Saturday over 50 boats were in view from the North Head. * * * The launch Norma and the 22i't. mullet boat Maide were put on tne hard on the Manukau Yacht Club’s site on Sunday. * * * Mr. W. Hudson, who acquired the 26ft. mullet boat Waitere 11. from Mr. A. Harvey, has not yet taken his new command to Manukau waters. * * * Messrs. Logan Brothers, junr., have bought the 22-footer Rakoa, recently owned by Messrs. F. and E. Saunders. Rakoa won the Lipton Cup two years ago. It is certain that under her new ownership she will be heard of next season.
Doris, Wild Wave, Kathleen and Matariki have gone into Cox’s Creek for the winter hauling out. Other boats belonging to Richmond will leave the water this week. During the week-end several boats made the trip to Riverhead. Included in the company were Starloch, Starlight, Tulip, Phyllis, Otira and Manu. The launch Cyrena also went with the yachts. She had on board several guns. It is stated her party had good shooting ashore. On the return trip on Sunday evening the boats had a hard slog in the face of the nor’-easter blowing up the harbour. * * * A number of the bigger boats have definitely finished their cruising and the question of where to pull up is exercising the thought of owners. Ilex may be put on the hard in Hobson Bay, but the trouble of getting past the wall and over the mud may cause a reconsideration of the plan. T. Jones; Mrs. Hawson v. Mrs. J. E. Jackson; Miss M.
