Strangely enough, Norman Gillespie the Australian feather-weight champion boxer who came across to meet Tommy Griffiths and Johnny Leckie found the smaller fry in Dunedin a bit diffident in. coming forward as sparring partners far him. There was a time when a boxer of this calibre would have been rushed by tyros anxious to learn a thing or two, even -at the expense of stopping a few “hotties,” but Tommy McCarten, one of Dunedin’s cleverest and most promising boys, appears to have been the only one to come up to the scratch and mix it with the Australian in his training.
