EASY PICKINGS

GULLS BEAT FIEHERMEN Food for seagulls must have been scarce yesterday. The result was bad for a crowd of fishermen who left the harbour in a 40ft. launch to fish off Tiri. They were joined very early by a number of small black gulls, believed to be late God wits, and their bait supply, as a result, was heavily depleted. The extraordinary feature was that the gulls attacked the baited hooks. No sooner was a line cast out than with a swoop a gull was after it, and the birds apparently went to considerable depths robbing the hooks. The birds were extraordinarily cheeky, and it became quite a gamble on the fishermen’s part as to whether they would get their bait down to the bottom. One of the birds got tangled in a line and was hauled aboard. It used its beak strenuously until liberated. Good hauls of fish were secured.
