LYTTELTON FIRST PORT OF CALL ’fßpeeial to THB BUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday. For the firet time in many years an overseas vessel has made Lyttelton *ts first port of call on its maiden voyage. This is the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s new motor-ship Zealandic, which arrived yesterday from New-castle-on-Tyne, where she was built. The Zealandic is one of four new motor vessels which have recently been launched for the same company, All of them are twin screw motor-ships, 500 ft. in length, with a total dead weight, including the weight of the refrigerating machinery and installation, of about 11,190 tons. They are of the complete superstructure type, with a long bridge amidships. There are five holds and refrigerating space between decks for the carriage of meat,' dairy produce and fruit. The total capacity is 404,000 cubic feet. There is also uninsulated space of approximately 262,000 cubic feet of cargo. The loading and discharging gear includes 20 electric winches of the latest type, working an equal number of derricks for weights of from seven to 10 tons. In addition there is a special derripk for heavier loads.
There are four double-berth state rooms, and the saloon is at the forward end of the bridge deck. is also a smoking room. The machinery consists of twin-reversible, single-act-ing two-stroke Diesel engines.
