MAJOR J. A. NORTHCOTE The death has occurred of Major 'ames Alfred Northcote, of Waiau, in .-Torth Canterbury, at the age of 67. Major Northcote was once a prominent volunteer officer. DR. J. A. THOMSON The death occurred at Wellington yesterday afternoon of Dr. James Allan Thomson, director of the Dominion Museum, and the first Rhodes Scholar in New Zealand. Dr. Thomson was born in Dunedin in 1881, the son of the Hon. G. M. Thomson, and was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School and the Otago University. In 1904 he was selected as New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, and while at Oxford took his M.A. and played a great part in representative football. In 1912 Dr. Thomson became a doctor of science, and in 1914 was given the post of director of the .Dominion Museum. Since then he has been a member of the Board of Governors of the New Zealand Institute, and was honorary librarian from 1914 to 1922. He is the author of about 60 papers on geology, palaeontology and natural history, and was editor of the “New Zealand Journal of Science and Technology.” REV. T. D. C. FERMINGER After spending only two years in New Zealand, the Rev. T. D. C. Ferminger, of Arney Crescent, Remuera, died on Saturday, at the age of 68 years. Mr. Ferminger spent many years in the active service of the Anglican Church, holding charges in England and Hobart, Tasmania. Two years ago, suffering from ill health, he retired from his position in the Societj' for the Propogation of the Gospel, and came to New Zealand. Mr. Ferminger, who was a widower, had no relatives in the 7J>ominion. DR. JAMES MACPHERSON Dr. James Macpherson, who died in Hamilton on Saturday, was born In Perthshire, Scotland, 71 years ago. On coming to New Zealand he practised in Dunedin, where he remained for many years. During the Great War he served in the Medical Corps, and after his return specialised in mental hospital work. For some years past he has been superintendent of the Tokanui Mental Hospital. Dr. Macpherson is survived by his widow, a son and three daughters: Dr Douglas Macpherson, of San Francisco, Mrs. A. K. Watson, of Peebleshire, Scotland, Mrs. F. Yates, of ton, and Mrs. A. W. Skinner, of Te Awamutu.
