Northern Rabble Crosses Yellow River
DISORDERS IN SHANTUNG DISCIPLINED SOUTHERNERS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian P.A. —United Service) Reed. 11.20 a.m. SHANGHAI, Wednes. The Japanese News Agency reports that a withdrawal has been ordered from Tsinanfu of Japanese troops sent to protect Japanese nationals. The crisis is passed, and order restored. Other reports state that Japanese forces are continuing toward Tsinanfu, and have already met in conflict with Chinese looters, necessitating the use of firearms. Southern troops are well disciplined. The Northerners are scattered and leaderless, and are retreating pell-mell across the Yellow River. The Shantung province is rapidly filling with Northern deserters and defeated troops. The authorities are preparing to offer a stubborn resistance. The Southerners’ next objective is believed to be Tientsin, which is occupied by many foreign troops.
