MILKMAN FINED
WATER IN MILK '
(From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, To-day.
A Pukekohe milk vendor named Frederick Baker pleaded guilty at the Pukekohe Court yesterday, before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., to having sold milk with 9 per cent, of water added, and to selling the same when it did not comply with the standard requirements.
Sergeant J. T. Cowan stated that the health inspector had the analysis made as the result of a number of complaints. An analysis of the milk supplied by a farmer to Baker proved to be satisfactory.
For the defence, Mr. E. G. Foster pointed out that Baker had been in the business for 10 3'ears, and had not been prosecuted previously. He suggested there had been some water in a can into which a small quantity of milk had been poured from a larger vessel.
The magistrate, in imposing a fine of £ 3 on the first charge, and a conviction on the second, said he had taken into consideration the fact that Baker had been in business for so long. The adding of water may not have been wilful, but no doubt he was guilty of culpable negligence.
