CHEVROLET GANG

FURTHER SENTENCES CHARGES OF THEFT Press Association. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The members of the so-called “Chevrolet gang,” whose offences caused a stir last year when they converted motors to their own use, and broke into and entered buildings, appeared before Mr. Justice Sim in the Supreme Court this morning for sentence. The accused were Allan Reuben Barnett, William Henry Martin, John McGregor Wilson, and Alfred Edward Arundale. They were jointly charged with breaking and entering the shop of John Nevis Allan Cameron on July 17, 1927, and with stealing goods valued at £42 3s 9d, the property of Cameron.

His Honour said that as far as Martin and Barnett were concerned it would be sufficient to sentence them to a term of reformative detention, which would expire at the end of the sentences they were now serving. Burnett would be sentenced to five years’ reformative detention, to run concurrently with the five years he was now serving, and Martin would be sentenced to three years’ reformative detention, to be served concurrenty with the three years he was now serving. In regard to Wilson, his Honour said ho thought the circumstances justified him in giving Wilson another chance. He would be released upon probation for a term of three years. The conditions would be that he took out a prohibition order, and renewed it from time to time, and that he must pay £5 toward the costs of the prosecution. In regard to Arundale, the best course would be to order a term in the Borstal Institution. He would be ordered to be detained in an institution for a term of three years.
