ONE TREE HILL EXAMPLE ANNUAL MEETING HELD The creditable manner in which ratepayers of One Tree Hill Road District pay their rates was the subject of comment by the chairman of the board. Mr. R. G. Clark, at the annual meeting of ratepayers held last evening. In congratulating residents, he said that 91.2 per cent, of the amount levied had been promptly paid. The 54th annual report, which was adopted, stated that the year had again closed with a credit balance on the general account. The amount £ 50« though not large, was very satisfactory in view of the large sums spent on public works, and the fact that the general rate was reduced from Is *>d to Is 3d. Rates collected totalled £23,309. Total receipts, excluding loans, amounted to £34.534. Despite depression building activity had been very satisfactory. Permits were issued for new buildings and alterations to the value of £130.431. EXCELLENT WATER SUPPLY Speaking on the report, the chairman said these was every satisfaction for the local water supply, which, when the city was short during the summer, was supplying 430.000 gallons a. day, or double the normal consumption. Mr. Clark denied a suggestion that the water was odorous. Analysts' reports showed there was none better in the country. The presence of sand could not be helped. An investigat_on ■would be made of the mains in Whetcrangi Road. Referring to the shaft now being sunk on One Tree Hill, the chairman said that, acting on the advice of a iirer. a shatt 4ft. 6in. square had been sunk nearly 1.0 ft.. and it was intended to sink a bore a further s»>ft. ‘We have spent £250 on the shaft,” Mr. Clark added, in reply to a question, “and I say it is worth every penny. It was 4ft. 6in. square and would cost no more to sink than a bore. "I am not at liberty to divulge fb.e name of the person who divined it, he said, “but if we do not meet with success it will be the first failure this gentleman has had. BRIGADE TO DISBAND As soon as legal formalities have been completed the volunteer fire brigade will be disbanded and the Auckland Fire Beard will take over fire control of the district. Thirty automatic alarm boxes are to be * installed and the modern fire-fighting equipment of the city will be placed at the disposal of One Tree Hill at an annual charge of £550. 3-1 r.
