Intoxication Charge Against Doctor
CAR HITS SAFETY ZONE NAME SUPPRESSED MEANWHILE A city doctor whose name was suppressed appeared at the Police Court to-day charged with being intoxicated while in control of a motor-car. His arrest followed on an accident in Queen Street late last evening. The car hit a safety zone, and then struck a tramway pole. Mr. Haigh applied for a remand, and asked that accused’s name should be suppressed in the meantime. “Very well,” said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt. “The name is suppressed until I hear some particulars.” Accused was remanded to appear again next Tuesday. The car, which was being driven up Queen Street, suddenly swerved to the right and dashed over the raised safety zone at the foot of Wyndham Street, crashing into the centre-pole. There was no one on the zone at the time. The front right-hand wheel was torn off and the axle broken. The mudguard and bodywork were badly damaged. In a few minutes a number of tramcars filled with patrons from the picture theatres were held up. A large crowd collected and pushed the car across the zone to the side of the road. Shortly afterwards a car driven by Mr. W. G. Bryden passed along the tramrails to avoid the wrecked vehicle and struck the same centrepole. One headlight was twisted, the mudguard bent and the steering gear damaged. Mr. Bryden was not injured.
