AUCKLAND’S PROGRESS NEW CABLES TESTED It was reported at a meeting of the Auckland Power Board, presided over yesterday by Mr. W. J. Holds worth, that the four 22,000-volt cables connecting King’s Wharf and Penrose had been subjected to severe test, with satisfactory results. There had been minor faults discovered in the insulation when the cable was being installed, but the test should remove all doubts of inefficiency. One of the cables was already in commission. During the past week 79 overhead services, 14 poles, and 18,000 yards of cable had been erected by the service gangs. At the Penrose sub-station 220 yards of cable had been connected to the outdoor station, and two dividing boxes for the 22,000-volt cables completed. Reinforcement of the Mount Eden area, Wairiki Road section, was proceeding satisfactorily, and 3,500 yards of cable had been put up. Transformer poles had been erected in Momome Avenue, One Tree Hill, and cable run out ready for straining up. while on the Ellerslie-Panmure Road work had been going forward in transferring the low-tension cables to new poles. In the district 27 poles and 2,500 yards of cable had been erected. In extending the lines in Church Street, Otahuhu, and McKenzie Road. Mangere 1,250 yards of cable had been used, while at Clevedon 12,000 yards of cable had been run out ready for straining. Extensions amounting to 160 yards had been made to the White Swan Road line.
