“OLD FOLKS’ DAY”
MEETING AT TABERNACLE What is said to be one of the best meetings of its kind for many years was held at the Baptist Tabernacle on Saturday afternoon, when nearly 40U aged people, including many of Auckland’s oldest citizens, celebrated ‘ Old Folks’ Day.” For the conveyance of the old folks to the church over 50 motor-cars were used. One car contained a party of four whose combined ages totalled 331 years. As well as people taken from their private homes, inmates of the Auckland Infirmary, the Veterans’ Home, and other institutions were present. Mrs. PI. T. Dewar, of Pompallier Terrace, Ponsonby, who celebrated her 94th birthday a week ago, was the oldest church member present. Others present were a church member who had been foreman in charge of the plastering of the Tabernacle 43 years ago. and one who had attended every “Old Folks Day” during the last seven years. The Rev. J. J. North, principal of the Baptist College, delivered an amusing address entitled ’’Growing Old Young.” A musical programme was given and afternoon tea was served. Fifteen bouquets were presented to the oldest people present.
