THE RIGHT SORT
QOME trotters are more useful than others, and of those who can do their owners a good turn apart from picking up a stake on race day, the black squaregaiter Lackiewood can lay claim to special recognition. He has rendered valuable assistance to owner D. W. Thomas on numerous occasions by his general usefulness in such details as ploughing, carrying wood, grain and other commodities, while on Sundays and high days he has conveyed the family on open-air excursions. Such duties have certainly not proved detrimental to his track ability, as he clearly demonstrated at Te Aroha when from 192yds behind He cleaned up a field of trotters which included jiggers, joggers and halfpie gallopers. Apart from this, however, Lackiewood’s performance was a meritorious one and the public showed its approval of a good, reliable trotter in no small measure when Reg. Woods and his charge returned to the enclosure.
