HASTINGS SURPRISES
SOME FINE RACING TRESHAM’S CUP STAKES TO JOY KING (Special to THE SUNJ HASTINGS, Friday. Rain overnight softened the Hastings course for the opening of the Hawke’s Bay autumn races. The day was one of sensational dividends, three being much greater than ordinary double figures, one of them running well into three figures. The Cup was won comfortably by Tresham from Vertigern, and Jeanette, an outsider, won the Porangahau Handicap. A great finish in the Stakes saw Joy King beat Crown Area by a nose, with Great Charter only a head away. The sum of £12,910 was put through the machine compared with £13,628 on the opening day last year. A Hard Finish The pool on the Mangatarata Hurdles wa,s a small one, and Red Fuchsia was sent out a better favourite than Braeman. There was not a great deal of pace on in the early stages, and Peshwa and Bonny Rill made the running, but half a mile from home Red Fuchsia made his move, and Braeman went after him. From the straight entrance to the judge the pair were together, and in a slogging finish Red Fuchsia won by a head. Peshwa, who was third, was a dozen lengths away, and Maunga last. Both the steeplechasers Maunga and Bonny Rill are fairly well forward, and went nice races. Royal Elm Nicely In a weak field for the High-weight Handicap Mountain Heath and CeJ,luna carried” the public confidence. Clavers, Chrishna, Royal Elm, Molong, Caluna and Mountain Heath were the leaders most of the way, and in th*» straight Royal Elm came away and won rather nicely by a length from Mountain Health, who beat Calluna by three lengths, with Crishna and Clavers next. Royal Elm missed the jump out but got a run through on the rails at the first turn* and thereafter was never further back than third. He was ridden by the amateur horseman, Mr. J. McDonald. Mountain Heath and Crishna should improve. Outsider Scores A dividend of sensational proportions was returned in the Nursery Handicap, for which Miss Ransom and Briar Root were the favourites. Miss Ransom began well, but Tane went with her and soon headed her off. Briar Root quickly ran up close to the leaders, and Miss Ransom drifted back a little just before the home turn, but made another effort in the straight, where Tane died out of the contest. Gold Bag tackled Briar Root and Sylvan Dell, and Miss Ransom joined in, but the latter had to alter her course. Gold Bag just hung on long enough to win by a head from Briar Root. Two lengths away were Sylvan Dell and Miss Ransom, then Tane and Millais. The favdurite’s form was not up to what she showed earlier in the season, but Briar Root is showing improvement. Tane looks like turning out a useful sort. Clarendon fell. Interesting Contest The Stakes was a most interesting race, and resulted in a great finish. Kaihoro and Banket made the early running from Great Charter, who was on thd rails and unable to hold liis place. The Hawk showed up among the leaders after going three furlongs, and then Crown Area went up. Approaching the straight Joy King and Great Charter were last. Crown Area, Joy King, Raasay, Great Charter and Crown Area fought out a splendid finish, Joy King winning by a nose from Crown Area, with Great Charter a head away, and Raasay right "up fourth. Great Charter was very unlucky not to win as he was unable to get a run through till too late. Tresham Wins Well
Cohesion set out to win the Hawke’s Bay Cup from end to end. Lady Desmond and Vertigern were lying it cond all the way to the straight, and Tresham was behind them. Six furlongs from home Cohesion was half a dozen lengths in front, but at the home turn the others were with him. Lady
Desmond could not run on, and Vertigern and Tresham came away, Tresham winning rather easily by two lengths. David Garrick finished on well in third place, two lengths away, and Addlepate was fourth, with Lady Desmond and Cohesion next. Sensational Dividend The quick closing of the machine surprised bettors on the Poukawa Handicap, and several horses had no money at all against their names. Callanmore led to the straight from Le Champ, Aston, Rapiata and Keen, and in another hard finish Keen won by a head from Callanmore. Rapiata was a close third and Dreamy fourth, with Aston and Le Champ not far away. As only one tickets was invested on the winner he paid a sensational price. Favourite Scores Vesperus was backed down to a short price in the Autumn Handicap, and lie pulled his backers through very easily. He was never far from the leaders, and followed Princess Nata, Avazone and Othon into the straight, coming away in the run home and winning by half a length from Gaze, who finished well from the rpiddle of the field. Othon was a length away third, and Nata fourth, just ahead of I-Iypnotic,
