TRAPPED BY FLAMES
man has close call
escapes by window
(From Our Own. Correspondent) TAIHAPE, To-day. To be the sole occupant of a burning building, and to find himself trapped by flames, was the experience of Mr. Gerald Murphy, at Bennett's Siding, some miles from Taihape, early this morning. \[r. Murphy was awakened by a crackling noise and, on investigating, discovered the dining room was a mass of flames. He just managed to feel his way back to the bedroom, and with a great effort closed the door on the fire. With only a little time to spare he made his way to safety through a broken window, and within twenty minutes the old wooden building of 26 years’ standing was a glowing mass of embers. Nothing was saved. The house was insured for £ 500, but the furniture was not; covered by insurance. The fire is believed to have originated in tiie dining room, where there had been an open fire the previous evening.
