NEW CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL OPENING SOME GREAT RACING If the enthusiasm displayed by the members and supporters of the newly-formed University Swimming and Life Saving Club on the occasion of its first annual carnival at the Tepid Baths on Tuesday evening, is any indication, the club promises to have an exceedingly bright future. entries constituted a record for so lute in the season, and the number of events decided, 34 in all, covered sprint' and distance swiimniirv. diving and novelty events, in ail of which the keenest rivalry was shown. The-excellent attendance tvas treated to swimming and diving of a very hi#; standard and it' was sitown that ti e new club will be able to compete w’th distinction against the older and more experienced clubs of Auckland. J. Farrell, who was shaping so well over the 100yds in the earlier part of the season, came to light and won the 33 l-3yds, the 50yds and the 100 yds championships. He was nls£> responsible for the success of Law in winning the inter-faculty relay race, and came third in the 220yds championship. C. J. E. McLean, was also prominent, and G. Johnston, of the Ponsonby Club, after two years’ absence, made a remarkable return. The Misses Leitz, Steel, Gallagher and Cranwell. were most prominent among the women. Luring the evening. Miss Ena Stockley, Auckland’s sole representative at the Olympic (Sanies, gave an exhibition swim. She was accorded a rousing reception, and was given a hearty send-off. Miss Stockley left last evening for 'Wellington to johi the remainder of the team which sails on -.Saturday.
The officials for the night, under Mr.;E. B. Hardy, conducted the carnival with credit to themselves, and tho . lengthy programme was run off without a hitch, and in excellent time. Results: —-

Mr. R. M. Sheffield, on behalf of the Auckland centre, presented Miss Stockley with a dressing set, and wished her all success at the Games. A handbag was also presented Miss Stockley on Tuesday from the Grammar Swimming Club, of which she is captain, and Mr. R. "Woodward, of Herne Bay, gave her a greenstone tiki.
