OAT MARKET FIRMER

POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. Oats are very much firmer. A grade Gartons sold on Tuesday at 3s lOd f.0.b., s.i, an advance of one penny since last week-end. Holders now ask 3s lid, but there have been no sales at this figure. The advance comes about through further inquiries from London, offers having been increased, with the result that a fairly considerable quantity has been sold for May shipment. There is inquiry for B grade, but there is no advance in price. The margin on Tuesday was too great, being 5d a bushel. Wheat is in the same position as at last week-end, but greater quantities are offering by growers. Sales have been made at 5s 7d, on trucks, milling Tuscan, and 6s Hunters. Partridge peas show no change. Oyer sellers are finding difficulty in covering requirements owing to a higher percentage than usual being rejected. Seeds show little change, and practically no business is passing. Red clover has begun to offer from growers, but most samples show a large percentage of brown seeds. Merchants offer 8d to 9d a lb., but growers are disinclined to accept these values. White clover is offering more freely, but the quality is indifferent, up , to 9d being paid for best

lots. Italian ryegrass seems firmer. Very little is offering from growers and merchants have advanced the price 3d to 3s 9d a bushel, f.o.b. Very few potatoes are offering from farmers. The quotation for prompt is £3 10s.
