STOCK MARKET REVIEW

FIRM VALUES CONTINUE FEWER STORES MOVING A gradual falling off in the offerings of store stock, particularly ewes, is noticeable in all centres. Prices continue firm, however, with fat stock meeting with a strong market. A short yarding of light to medium weight cattle at Westfield on Tuesday changed hands on a market firm at previous week’s easier rates. Choice ox sold up to 355, with a few lines making perhaps a shade more. There was little in the offering of either ox or cow beef to induce buyers to pay premium rates. Two lines of rather well-finished medium weight cattle, one from the Whakatane district and ore from the lower Waikato, helped to bring up the average quality of the yarding. One or two of the best known "Westfield vendors such as B. Reed (Waerenga), Jas. Taylor (Cambridge), and H. Bayly (Okoroire) had lines forward, but none of the cattle were heavy prime, qualifying merely for the term “nicely finished.” At Addington on Tuesday there was a free sale for well-finished beef. Best made from 38s to 41s a 1001 b, a few to 425; heavy and medium quality made 35s 6d to 37s 6d; secondary, 33s to 355; extra prime heifers, to £l3 7s 6d; prime heifers, £ll to £l2 15s; medium heifers, £0 5s to £lO 15s; light heifers, £5 15s to £0 10s; extra prime cows, to £l3 2s 6d; prime cows, £lO 5s to £l2; medium cows, £8 5s to £10; aged cows, £4 10s to £7. Tuesday’s market at Westfield for fat sheep opened up slightly under last week’s higher levels, but soon improve* to see firm values rule for the greater part of the sale. With a large percentage of big-framed prime wethers forward, the demand for ewes suffered slightly, though there was no appreciable change in the market once buyers getf; under way. Quality for quality that of the ewes was below that seen in the wether pens, and though there were many lots of well-finished ewes, comparatively speaking, they did not carry anything like the weight of wool seen on the wethers. The greater part of the yarding came from near-Auckland vendors. Buyers for the big butchering firms seemed more inclined to operate and the biggest yarding for some weeks was largely absorbed by these men. Wellfinished heavy prime wethers made up to 36s 6d, ewes made to 29s 3d. The fat sheep market in all parts of the Dominion is firm and offerings in all parts are quickly snapped up. A record yarding at Poverty Bay last week sold at firm prices, and quotations from that quarter lead to the assumption that there should be a fairly safe margin for the Auckland dealer who is prepared to handle small lots, and can hold to suit the market at this end. Feilding also reports steady business, though the volume of stock passing through that market at the moment does not appear to be large, and the bulk of business down that way must be in the paddock. At Addington on Tuesday about 70 per cent, of the ordinary entry of fat sheep met with a keen demand. Light prime wethers made 7d to 7£d a lb, and primest ewes 4?d to sd. An average yarding of mostly light and poorly-finished iambs at Westfield met with a good demand at late rates. At Addington only 1,500 lambs came forward compared to 3,890 last week. Values were fully on a par with improved rates for export. Primest made to 355. An exceptionally short yarding of mostly poorly finished and rough calves met with a keen demand for the few prime vealer,s forward, and prices advanced appreciably. At Addington on Tuesday a small entry and sale at last week's values. Best 12 to 18 months cross sorts made £6 10s to £8 10s; vealers, £3 to £6 ss. Fat pigs at Westfield on Tuesday met with a steady demand and prices remained firm. Values were inclined to ease for stores, which, although in shore supply, were not so keenly sought after. NATIONAL INSURANCE DIVIDEND An interim dividend of 4d a share has been declared by the directors of the National Insurance Company. The last sale of the company’s 6s paidup shares was put through in Auckland at 15s 9d.
