FEWER PLEASURE TRIPS
AUCKLANDERS TRAVEL LESS
It was suggested before the Transport Appeal Board this morning that Aucklanders are travelling less than they were a few months ago—whether through lack of sufficient money or in a desire to curtail their pleasure jaunts, was not explained. The question was raised by the quotation of figures showing that the revenue of a Kohimarama bus proprietor had fallen substantially during the past few months. The Chairman of the Board (Mr. Justice Frazer): Why is this? Mr. V. Meredith (for the bus proprietor) : It is hard to say. There is much talk of the bays in that district being unsafe for bathing. It was explained that the harbour ferry figures had fallen similarly. “It might be a shortage of money,” Mr. Meredith suggested, “or it may be that Aucklanders are indulging in less pleasure.” Mr. J. A. C. Allum: Has the regular revenue fallen off? Mr. Meredith: Very little. The Chairman: It is the “catch” traffic that has gone off, then ? Mr. Meredith: That is so. The cold fact is, the oeonle are not travelling.
