DEIVERED THE GOODS”
TRIBUTE TO MR. COATES “FIRST COMMERCIAL TRAVELLER” Press Association. WELLINGTON, To-day. The annual conference of the Cnited Travellers and Warehousemen’3 Association opened to-day, the chairman, Mr. T. E. James, presiding. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. poates, patron of the association, was ib attendance. The chairman spoke of the high reSard in which they held their patron, because he was, in fact, the first comJiercial traveller in New Zealand, having represented the Dominion at Imperial Conference and delivered the goods. He did not intend to ask ® r - Coates for anything at present, Jut a request would probably be profiled for a charter for the Canterbury Association. In the course of a timely address, Coates said that New Zealand *as only a small country, but was to produce many commodities lor which a demand might be found tn other parts of the Empire and the Opportunity had arisen for *>ew Zealand representatives to visit several countries, and understanding had been made possible, in both political and trade aspects, of tariffs and £ther matters which might have hampered trade. The ground-work had been done and a practicable scheme had been made possible at a juirly early date. It was essential that the commercial community should be in close co-operaticn with the political side. When the favorable trade balance had had +ime to °pcrate, they would find that the e ffect of the economic depression *°uld be less felt, in the gradual absorption of many worthy men who toW could not see an end to their hfhculti*" Lk
