ART GALLERY SITE
GIFT TO CHRISTCHURCH ARCHITECTS TO COMPETE (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The Christchurch City Council has decided to erect the £25,000 art gallery, the gift of Mr. R. E. McDougall, in the Botanic Gardens on a site at the rear of the museum, for which statutory authority has already been granted. The Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer, announced to-day that competitive designs for the .ery w-ould be invited from architects in New Zealand, Australia and England, and that the sum of £3OO would be offered, in three equal amounts of £IOO, for the three best designs submitted. This decision was In accordance with the wishes of Mr. Me ugall. Mr. S. Hurst Seager would be the assessor for the competition, and the architects taking part would be asked to submit sketch plans. The three best plans would be selected by Mr. Seager, and the successful competitors would then be asked to complete the plans in detail. The architect whose design was adopted would be asked to construct the building.
