Motoring Magic

Number-Plate Mystery INSTRUCTIONS carried out Even the best regulated Government departments make mistakes- Sometimes the consequences are amusing, sometimes annoying. The other day a traffic officer in. tile course o£ duty noticed a strange discrepancy in the number plates of a parked motor-car. On the front the car bore the number 7791- Inspecting the rear plate, the traffic man was astonished to see that it read 7792. Puzzled, he iept the car under observation. The driver did not appear. Out o£ the incident arose a .charge of leaving a car unattended. A certain solicitor was summoned to answer the charge at this mornings sitting of the Traffic Court. The solisitor-inoioil-t contended that somebody else had also been issued with an .odd pa r ct number plates. Further, cn ?h~ f.-y in question he was out of towr, dining with a Maori princess. Was it not only possible, but extremely probable that the wrong motorist had been summoned? he argued. True, his car was of the make described by the traffic officer, but what of that? Why Had he affixed the discordant plates? Well—Government instructions faithfully obeyed; that was all. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, appreciated the humour of the situation. “Not proved!” he said. “Case dismissed."
