FIRE IN COAL BUNKER
OUTBREAK ON MAHIA STEAMER AT LYTTELTON (Special to TUB SUN) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. When the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s liner Mahia arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from Port Chalmers, her bunker hatch amidships was on fire. The outbreak was probably due to spontaneous conbustion. Since the vessel’s arrival gangs have been getting out the coal, which is being temporarily stored between decks in order to get at the seat of the fire. At present smoke is coming from the ventilators. The iron plates of the hatch are very hot, and it is thought the fire had been burning for several days before the vessel reached Lyttelton. Then men will probably be working overtime to-night until the seat of the fire is reached.
