BOISTEROUS WEATHER

GREAT SOUTH ROAD UNDER WATER HARBOUR CRAFT BUFFETED City parks and gardens will soon be showing the effects of the downpour yesterday. There had not been any heavy rain since the beginning of March, and autumn growths were being affected. Though all ferry-boats ran to time yesterday, passengers experienced the most boisterous weather that has prevailed in the harbour for some time. In the southern suburban districts the downpour was heavy, and. in the late afternoon, several inches of water flowed over the Great South Road. The southern big way was under water near Runciraan.

At Takapuna the squalls were particularly heavy and at one time rain was fallipg over the Lake area at the rate of two inches an hour.

Wind squalls and heavy seas resulted in the breaking of the moorings of the Devonport Swimming Club’s concrete punt off Cheltenham beach. The punt drifted ashore, but was not damaged. Farmers welcome the change, which, should it be followed by mild weather, will do good to pasture lands. Sunshine prevailed on the Waitakeres and the water in the reservoirs is sinking to the level at the beginning of March. Water is still being pumped from Western Springs. Up to midnight on Sunday the rainfall for April totalled only .61 inches, but the fall for the succeeding 24 hours was 1.15 inches, making 1.7 G inches for the month. The average for April is 3.77 inches.
