MT. EDEN BOROUGH

DOMES AT INTERSECTIONS REVISION OF BY-LAWS The report of the traffic inspector to the Mount Eden Borough Council last evening stated that domes had been placed at the intersections of all important roads in the borough. It was necessary to illuminate the domes at night. The inspector recommended that a particular type of light be installed on all existing domes and that if domes were required for the intersections the same type should be purchased. The inspector also suggested that the revised by-laws already framed dealing with pedal-cycles, horse-drawn vehicles, damage to apparatus In parks, cleaning and repairing vehicles on highways, and motor and other vehicles using the domain, be adopted. The inspector’s recommendation and suggestion were referred to the finance committee for a report. During the month of March 24 building permits, to the value of £7,407, were granted. The finance committee recommended that the Mayor of Wellington be advised that the council approved generally of the scheme as submitted for unemployment insurance, but is of the opinion that working details of the scheme would require further investigation. It was also rocommended that consideration of the report on the trolley buses be deferred for the present. PA ON MT. EDEN The Te Akarana Maori Association wrote advising that it had asked Mr. Chamberlain, of New Plymouth, to come to Auckland to go into the question of the cost of the Maori pa on Mount Eden. A letter was received from the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, oppealing for a contribution toward the cost of purchasing 31 acres of land at Waimauku, on which there is valuable native bush. The question was referred to the finance committee for a report. A resident of Mount Pleasant Road wrote complaining of the condition of the road, on which no work had been done for a long time. The correspondence committee reported that the work would receive attention at an early date. The Duplex Fire-Alarm Company advised that all material for the fire-alarm-system would be forwarded to the district and that the manager would make an early start in installing the system. A subscription of £5 5s was made to the Workers’ Educational Association toward the cost of its work.

The Returned Soldiers’ Association advised that it is appealing for subscriptions on Poppy Day. The correspondence committee recommended that the council arrange a collection provided that the funds, which will be subsidised £1 for £1 by the council, be retained in the borough and expended on the employment of returned soldiers. It was also recommended that a wreath be purchased for the Cenotaph. The recommendations were adopted. Messrs. W. Woolley and R. McK. Morison recommended that street lamps be provided at Parau Street and Woodside Road, and it was decided to adopt the recommendation.

The drainage report stated that contracts were progressing in a satisfactory manner and that it was expected to commence the drainage contract from Valley Road to Prospect Rise and Mount Eden Road to-day.
