PRODIGIOUS SPEED

GERMAN ROCKET CAR OVER 400 MILES AN HOUR (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian Press Association) BERLIN, Saturday. The director of the Opel Motor Company asserts that in yesterday’s trial of the “rocket” car it obtained a speed of 430 miles an hour for a few seconds. The rocket car resembles a racing car except that it has a steel chamber at the rear which contains 12 pipes whence the rockets are discharged. Pairs of pipes are connected with the fuses and are linked to the switchboard, which is controlled by the driver. The rockets are discharged by an electric spark, which causes a sheet of flames to burst out. The car leaps forward with a terrific speed, and is enveloped in a smoke cloud. The drawback to its use is that each rocket costs a small fortune.
