Toe H. Lamp

DEDICATION BY PRIMATE IMPRESSIVE SOLEMNITY The Toe H Lamp, which the Prince of Wales first lighted at the Guildhall in London in December, was rekindled at St. Matthew’s Church, Auckland, last evening, by the Primate, Archbishop Averill. FpHE lamp was dedicated to the memory of Lieut.-ColoneJ G. A. King, D. 5.0., who was killed in France in 1917, and members of the Toe H brotherhood. Mrs. King and her daughter were present at the ceremony, which was conducted with impressive simplicity. The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, who was accompanied by Lady Alice Fergusson, read the lesson. The Rev. G. Coats and the Rev. K. McFarland, Toe H padres, led the prayers. Organisations represented at the service included the City Council, the Officers Club, the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the South African Veterans’ Association, the Rotary Club, and ex-army nurses. Mr. Horace Oyer, secretary of the Auckland group, handed the lamp to the Archbishop for dedication. “Lieut.-Colonel King truly represented the manly, upright, noble type,” said the Archbishop, in his address, “that Toe H seeks to honour.” The movement, he declared, did not stand for the glorification of war. .Neither did it stand for mere heroworship. But it stood for the recognition of those noble qualities manifested by the brave men who gave their lives for what they believed to he the only true principles upon which civilisation could exist.
