Mysterious Thief Robs Hotel Safe
SKELETON KEY USED NO SIGN OF INTRUDERS A mysterious robbery took place in the Rising Sun Hotel, Karangahape Road, on Saturday night. The safe was opened, apparently, with a skeleton key, and cleared cf its contents, which amounted to about £l5O, of which £4O to £SO was in silver, and the remainder in notes. No sign can be found of anyone having broken into the hotel or of any intruders leaving it. The safe was not damaged in any way, but was just left open by the thief or thieves. Mr. J. McGregor, the proprietor, was working in a downstairs room until 9.30 o’clock on Saturday night, and did not hear anyone moving about the hotel. The safe was in a bedroom upstairs. Mrs. McGregor had gone out during the evening, and the safe was quit© secure when she left. The robbery was discovered at about 11 o’clock, and must have taken place between 9.30 o’clock and that hour.
