SCHOOLS ATHLETICS
COMPETITIVE SCHEME ORGANISATION PLAN APPROVED The idea of forming a secondary schools’ athletic association was greeted with favour by a specially convened meeting held in Auckland yesterday. The principals of the schools of the province will be invited to consider the proposal, it being indicated that Mr. 11. J. L>. Mahon, headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, would convene a meeting for the purpose. Mr. J. P. Ivalaugher, who convened the meeting, presided. Others present were: Messrs. C. M. Littlejohn (Takapuna' Grammar School), F. W. Gamble (Mount Albert Grammar School), W. C. Morris and P. Smyth (St. Stephen’s Maori College), K. J. Dellow (Auckland Grammar School). G. J. Park (Seddon Memorial Technical College), W. F. Munro (Pukekohe Technical High School) and Messrs. PI. Frost and T. Laffey, representing athletic bodies interested. . It was explained that the organisation of secondary schools athletics could start with an annual athletic contest, in which each school would be allowed to enter two competitors in each event. The movement might later be developed in the form of swimming, boxing and similar interschool contests. No details were discussed, it being agreed that the scheme should bo laid before the principals for discussion. If they are favourably inclined toward the scheme, the details will probably be examined by expert members of their staffs. The scheme proposes that the competition should be open to pupils attending a secondary school, public or private, including technical schools. It is further suggested* that there should be junior, intermediate and senior grades, the winners to be awarded silver medals, and a championship shield to be presented to the school gaining most points. Schools eligible for membership would include the Auckland, Mount Albert and Takapuna Grammar Schools, King’s College, Sacred Heart College, Seddon Memorial Technical College. St. Stephen’s Maori College, Thames High School, Hamilton High School. Hamilton Technical School, Pukekohe Technical High School and Whangarei High School, and possibly Kowhai Junior High School, Matamata Junior High School and Rotorua High School.
