ARMIES OF NANKING RECROSSING YANGTSE
NORTHERN ONSLAUGHT HEAVY FIGHTING GOES ON (United P. A. —By Telegraph — Copyright.) (Australian Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. SHANGHAI, Thursday. An unconfirmed report says that the Nationalist forces are falling back on Nanking before the Northern onslaught, following anti-Nationalist successes in the northern part of the Kiangsu Province. The Nanking Government’s troops are recrossing the Yangtse southwards seeking the shelter of the walled city of Nanking. Sounds of gunfire are reported to be audible at Pukow, the Yangtse terminus of the Pukow-Tientsin railway. There are reports of heavy fighting between Chang-Tso-Lin’s and Chiang-Kai-Shek’s armies, in the vicinity of Hsuchowfu, following the launching of the offensive by the Northerners. These reports are apparently confirmed, though the permanency of the Northern victory is questionable.
